- Mayor Dean Broersma
Mayor Broersma was appointed to the Sunnyside City Council on March 25, 2013 to fill an unexpired term and was elected to the City Council in November 2013. On January 11, 2016, he was chosen by his peers to serve as Deputy Mayor for a two year term from 2016 to 2017 and again on February 8, 2021 as Deputy Mayor. He was elected as Mayor on January 10, 2021 by City Council.
Mayor Broersma has lived in the lower valley since 1974 and graduated from Sunnyside Christian School and Granger High School. In 1986 he graduated from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa with a degree in Secondary Education.
Mayor Broersma taught Spanish in Michigan before returning to Sunnyside in 1989. In 1990, he then began the Spanish program at Sunnyside Christian High School through 1997.
Mayor Broersma has served with Christian Reformed World Missions and on the Board of Directors of Colegios Cristianos Reformados (Cocref) in the Dominican Republic from 1997 to 2003. In 2003, he returned to Sunnyside.
Currently, Mayor Broersma owns a small business and is married with four daughters.
Mayor Broersma has served as a council member at Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church and as a board member at Sunnyside Christian School.
