Commission Responsibilities


Civil service helps assure that firefighters and law enforcement officers are recruited through open competition, hired and promoted on the basis of merit, and are demoted, suspended, removed from office, or discharged only for cause.

For Washington's cities and towns, civil service is established for firefighters by Chapter 41.08 RCW and Chapter 2.28 of the Sunnyside Municipal Code and by Chapter 41.12 RCW and Chapter 2.20.060 of the Sunnyside Municipal Code for police.

Seeking Citizen Volunteers for Boards & Commissions

The City of Sunnyside is accepting applications from citizen volunteers to fill a vacant position on the Sunnyside Civil Service Commission, as established by SMC 2.20 and 2.28:

  • Civil Service Commission (1 vacancy)              

The Sunnyside Civil Service Commission consists of three members appointed by the City Manager and confirmed by the City Council for six-year terms. The Board meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Law and Justice Center, 401 Homer Street, Sunnyside, WA.
